The Mission

From the Magnetic North Pole to the South Pole in a NISSAN EV

EV adventurers Chris and Julie, in partnership with Nissan, set out to do what nobody had done before – to drive an electric vehicle from Pole to Pole. Across the harshest landscapes, from tundra to desert, through cities and mountain ranges, this expedition was built to overcome challenges.

With no space for a film crew to tag along, Chris and Julie were tasked with capturing footage and images as and when they could, but with such a challenging expedition, filming content was naturally not the main priority. This approach yielded an assortment of footage – and this is where Fifty One came in, tasked with creating all the video assets for the campaign globally.

Our ability to create compelling content from disparate materials and bring them together into a strong narrative quickly made us an integral part of the team.

We provided technical guidance to Chris and Julie on capturing footage on the go, as well as bringing new creative ideas to push the content further. It was this approach, along with our technical, practical and multi-dimensional thinking that enabled us to create a comprehensive matrix of assets for use across multiple global channels as well as localisation support where required.

Like the expedition itself, nothing was left to chance. We were in constant contact with the expedition team – it was a real collaborative operation and we felt immense pride to be seen as critical partners to the expedition.

To the Desert

We didn’t just remain in the comfort of the UK, piecing together great user-generated content – we also filmed the team in the Atacama Desert. From the conception stage, this was earmarked as a prestige location to capture high-end visuals of the EV as it journeyed through the incredible landscape.

We spent four days in the desert living with the expedition crew and filming stunning visuals with cinema-level kit. It was an incredible experience, and we felt even more connected with the entire team.

Chris and Julie pushed on towards the South Pole, which they made two months later – becoming the first ever EV to achieve such a magnificent feat and gaining a Guiness World Record in the process.

Bringing it home

The expedition complete, it was time to bring it home and bring it all together in an in-depth interview. We created a bespoke set to bring to life the expedition – using memorabilia from the journey, but also creating thematic edits for use on screens placed throughout the set. It looked fantastic!

Long interviews covering every detail of the journey were distilled down into a tight film along with footage from every step of the way. It was an incredible experience for the entire team to come home and take stock of everything that was achieved.

Looking Ahead

The Pole to Pole expedition was over, but the adventure with Nissan, Chris, Julie and Fifty One Films continues. In fact, we’ve already flown to Scotland to meet with Chris and Julie, giving them further training on social-first content creation. We treat this element as being as critical as any other part of expedition preparation. We’re already getting together to see what we can do next, where we can go, and what challenges we can overcome as a team.
